The SWMSpiration of the SWMSPosium

Written by Jasmine Antonucci, one of our two 2024 SWMSPosium travel award recipients!

Attending the SWMS Conference 2024 was an unforgettable experience, and I’m incredibly grateful to have received the SWMS Travel Award, which made this opportunity possible. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but the connections I’ve made along the way have been pivotal in getting me to where I am today. It’s proof that community and mentorship can break down barriers and open doors where they may have seemed closed before. This conference gave me a chance to immerse myself in an inspiring community of women in science, and to connect with so many brilliant minds who are passionate about making an impact in this field.

What stood out to me during this conference was the shared sense of community. In a field that often feels dominated by larger systemic barriers, these women are proving that perseverance, collaboration, and mentorship can create an environment of support. From early-career researchers to seasoned professionals, each woman I met had a unique story that added richness and depth to the collective experience of being in marine science.

The life experiences shared during the conference were deeply moving. Whether it was navigating imposter syndrome, balancing family life with a demanding career, or dealing with the pressures of being a minority in a male-dominated field, the stories resonated with me on a personal level. They reminded me that while the journey may not always be easy, I am not alone. The strength, wisdom, and solidarity of other women in the field are invaluable resources that keep me going even when challenges arise.

Presenting my research was a highlight—sharing my work with others who are both supportive and insightful is always valuable. The feedback I received was helpful in sparking new ideas and fostering connections that may open doors for potential future collaborations or schools. It’s exciting to think about the possibilities that lie ahead.

Beyond the professional growth, the personal inspiration I gained was immense. Meeting so many empowering women at the conference reminded me of the power of community and the importance of supporting each other. Moving forward, I am even more determined to become an active participant in the SWMS network and to inspire other women to pursue their passions and make their voices heard in this space.

Looking ahead, I’m excited for what’s to come—whether it's advancing my education, exploring internship opportunities, or deepening my involvement with the SWMS network. This conference has reinforced my commitment to my future in school and research, and I can’t wait to see how my journey continues to unfold.

It’s clear to me now that the people you surround yourself with can profoundly shape the direction of your career. All of my mentors have shown me that success is not just about individual accomplishments, but about lifting others as you rise. I look up to them deeply—not only for their expertise but for the way they have fostered an environment of collaboration and support. Their encouragement has helped me gain the confidence to push boundaries, take risks, and pursue opportunities I once thought I could never reach.

To anyone who feels uncertain about taking the leap, I encourage you to apply, ask questions, and network. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, even if it feels intimidating. It’s through these steps that you’ll find the support and growth you need. The connections you make today could be the foundation for the incredible opportunities of tomorrow.

I’m excited to continue growing, learning, and contributing to the field alongside so many incredible women. Here's to more connections, more collaborations, and more opportunities to uplift each other in the years to come!
