Fouling Survey Coordinator (technically it's just "Research Technician")
I survey for marine invertebrate species in bays and estuaries using fouling plates. Our focus is to catalog non-native species. My specialty is the identification of tunicates.

For Who: Smithsonian Environmental Research Center

The lab that I work for (Marine Invasions) studies all aspects of marine invasive species including ballast water, hull fouling, surveys of ports and marinas, and modeling. The higher organization (SERC) is a mixture of marine and non-marine labs studying many different environmental sciences (mercury, climate change, fish conservation, GIS mapping, soil chemistry, etc, etc)

I

Implementation Support - Consultant
I provide implementation support to the Ocean Decade team within the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission - UNESCO. This involves facilitating the endorsement of Ocean Decade Actions through administrative duties as well as technical reviews of applications. Additionally, I maintain open communication channels with the endorsed Actions and between them and the communications team. I also provide strategic support to the Arctic Action plan development. The role involves a lot of networking, data management, and admin, but at times I also help draft documentation for policy briefers etc.

The IOC-UNESCO is an intergovernmental organisation which serves kind of like a secretariat to the world's ocean scientists. They have focus areas on ocean observations, tsunami warnings and marine spatial planning, and have now been mandated to manage, and implement the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The Ocean Decade Team is formed of core members who help strategically and implement the calls for Decade actions, as well as develop materials and deliver events. Other members of the team are focused on partnerships, liaising with foundations to mobilise resources, running informal working groups on monitoring & evaluation, technology, data, and communications. There is also a dedicated communications team, and other individuals who support the decentralised implementation structures of the Decade.

I identify marine organisms! Though they are classified as macroinvertebrates, I use a microscope to look at the details of a marine animal and put them into a taxonomic category with the goal of identifying them to the lowest level.

North Pacific Groundfish Observer
This job requires long trips at sea on a commercial fishing vessel on the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands. You will be required to pass a 3-week training course at NOAA/NMFS where you will learn to ID target fish species. At sea you must record catch data, collect sex-length frequencies and report fishing violations.

Postdoctoral researcher
I am a biological oceanographer and plankton ecologist interested in understanding the effects of climate change on plankton physiology and ecology. I study these dynamics in polar, open-ocean, and estuarine environments and utilize time series analysis and field experiments to explore these effects.

Scientific Program Officer
As a Scientific Program Officer at the MMC I have two official duties: 1) run the Survey of Federally Funded Marine Mammal Research Survey (https://mmcsurvey.org/) and 2) assess and comment on the US Marine Mammal Stock Assessment Reports when they are available for public comment. I also have the ability to assess and participate in other marine mammal projects that fall within the purview of the US Marine Mammal Commission.
